You can learn some training procedures by rote, but if you learn HOW DOGS’ MINDS WORK you will really understand enough to develop your own training procedures.

A psych prof at Univ. of BC wrote a very good book on this subject that you can download for less than $10, find it at
http://www.petsyclopedia.com/-amzn/list/petebooks/B0009XD4BU

I read that book carefully and thought it wonderful, especially on how dogs see the world (with their nose, too).

It also explains why certain ‘popular’ training procedures are cruel or not very good…

There are lots of other books too, many pages listed on this Yahoo search:

The first book I mentioned also explains the importance of puppy-human interaction at critical periods. Puppies lacking this can be fearful or much less trainable.

Has good section on characteristics of various breeds, to help you choose one or understand the one you have.

I have lots of experience with German Shepherds. These will nearly always be a problem if they are not trained.

Some dogs are good with children, some are not. Also info on how things change as your dog ages, spotting certain things you really need to know about…

A very good starting point.

The local library is a great resource for all kinds of topics. Look in the 636 section of non-fiction.

There are a lot of different approaches to training dogs. I have been working with lots of different kinds of animals for over 35 years, and I like clicker training (positive reinforcement) the best – you can find out more about it here http://www.clickertraining.com/home/

my dad trained our own dogs by going to a wide park with only a few people and teached our dog the sit position first by pushing his butt on the ground and then reward him with a loud and kind saying of "good boy" and then give him something he likes like a cookie.give it a try…

i would reccomend Richard Wolters Gun dog, Water Dog or Family dog. they take you step by step through the training process for most of the things you will want to train a dog. I also reccomend you find a local dog club and become a member. they usually have training seminars and are alot cheaper than obedience schools. You will also make great contacts with breeders and owners who will be able to reccomend you to others needing thier dogs trained. it can be a very rewarding business or hobby but it is also very time consuming
