Check out this video to see how you can get your dog to relax and be calm during nail clipping. Splash my BC falls asleep most of the time when I clip her nails. This is the safest way to clip your dogs nails without them struggling or snapping at or biting you.

Thanks for the great video. It was just the reminder I needed to go one step at a time. It’s so easy to rush things and get impatient.

Splash looks like she’s having a fabulous time, and it’s lovely to see a dog (Kiko) actually ~queuing up~ to have her nails done! I love the way you make everything so much fun for the dogs.

Great ideas! I love the step by step approach, and especially love the technique of having the dog upside down between your legs. I’m going to start that tonight!

I have a Petit Brabancon, 5 m.o., and last time I clipped his nails, he sulked for ages and was really wary of me afterwards.

    My dog’s not afraid …
My dog’s not afraid of the equipment, and she doesn’t mind me holding her feet, but she hates when you gently push her toes (to extend the nail a bit) which I automatically do when I go to cut her nails, especially between grooming when fur is in the way. She lets the vet do it (even though last time he split her nail down the middle, and didn’t even tell me), but with me she gets antsy and I’m afraid I’ll cut her quick. As you said, maybe I should start all over. Hopefully it will go better!

My dog Izzie HATES having her nails done, but I tried a tecnique when you get a bucket and put peanut butter in the bottom and they are distracted so they don’t notice the nail clippers as much……. and them you clip them…. and it worked! I’m going to post a video of clipping Izzie’s nails using this method today!

    I have tried …
I have tried everything! Now my groomer tells me she can not do my dogs nails anymore because he is too difficult. He only weighs 18 lbs. I thought working with difficult dogs was something they are trained for. I guess I was wrong. I dont know what to do. I will have to ask a vet what can be done because I can not do it.

I’m not a trainer, but I’d say until the dog is totally comfortable with what you’re expecting them to do. So until your dog is totally cool with nail trimming, keep training until its a relaxing thing to to them.

Would this work on a dog that is compleatly terrified of this? My dog is very skittish and my dad thiks just holding her down (it takes four of us by the way) and clipping her nails is the only way to do it. I really hate it when it comes time to clip her nails but right now they are so long it is dangerous to wals on slick floors because she falls.
