In no way do I condone pestering a dog in order to make them offer calming signals for you to see. I kissed Kiko on the head in this video to show you something that dogs HATE that is often done to them, not that I want to condone it! ?
Dogs bite. You should never put your face in a dogs face. Calming signals can be offered when you are standing or sitting, I was very close to Splash at one point in this video because it was hard to fit us in the video screen, and Splash is very comfortable with me being that close to her face. Never lean into a dogs face in order to communicate with them! Its Threatening!
This video is about the secret language of dogs. Some of you might already know about Calming Signals, but the main population that find out about Dog Training through Television programs might not.
In this video I will show you how you can use your dogs own language to communicate with them. I will also show you how to interpret your dogs language.
Turid Rugaas is an internationally renowned dog trainer who has studied and researched calming signals for over a decade! You can visit her site on calming signals to learn more AND PICK UP ONE OF HER BOOKS AND DVDS on the subject.

I also have to say that Turid Rugaas has the best leash walking book out there. My dog pulls-What do I do?
I am eternally grateful to Turid for giving me the ability to be able to talk with my dogs in their own language.
Here are the main calming signals that I like to use with dogs-
1 Soft Eye Blinks
2 Looking Away
3 Lip Licks
4 Yawning
1- you can use calming signals to calm a dog down and tell them “no worries”
2- You can monitor your dog’s calming signals and if they are doing more than normal you can tell your dog is getting more stressed (calming signals are normal and happen all the time)
3- If you pet your dog and they offer CS that is normal, but Imagine this Scenario- a child pets a dog and it offers lots of CS. Then the dog walks away from the child, and the parent brings the child to the dog again, and the dog offers even more CS and walks away to lie down, then the parent brings the child to pet the dog a third time, and finally the dog is so stressed that it growls, or bites. The parent could have read that the dog did not want to be petted by the child more than that first time if they knew about CS.

Are calming signals …
Are calming signals only used when the dog is trying to tell you to stop something? I have a new puppy (5 months old) that will climb into my lap and sigh or lick it’s lips. This happens even if I do not pet his head or any other sort of stimulus. Just curious.
I’ve noticed these signals work when I use them to calm my dog down. Great video, thanks.

a more frequent …
a more frequent level, I had a former fighting dog that had cero bodylanguage that today actually functions very well with others thanks to relearning her own language. Something you also forgot to mention was an increase in the calming signals, is showing stress instead, a dog that constantly licks its nose turns away head and displays eyewhite and buldge the eye a little might veyr well be preparing for attack. These dogs has usually b een punished when growling and their natural warning has

I have used calming …
I have used calming signals for close to ten years now in working with aggressive dogs and not all dogs have them due to their upbringing or lack of it. So even though a dog see’s it it will not always respond with them due to nurture, not sure how that effects your theory since I have never studied the neurological part of the brain. However I have noticed that once a dog bond with one human, and you go slowly with a well behaved stooge dog you can teach a dog to use the signals on

Wow-this is very …
Wow-this is very interesting. I’m a pretty laid back person and it’s always transfered to dogs around me-I didn’t realize a lot of it may be because I make a lot of these signals without even thinking about it. The dog I had before I got married was soooo laid back-sighed a lot, yawned a lot, all that good stuff-such a character-so laid back and self assured. Funny-our current dogs are always well behaved and calm around me but hyper around my wife-LOL. I’ll have to tell her about this!

Right after watching this video I went to take my dog for a walk, and when I went to put the harness over his head he clearly turned his head and licked his lips! So I got some treats and lured him into it instead, and that seemed to make it less stressful. Great video!

Great information. …
Great information. This stuff really works. My hubby and I were on our bikes stopped behind a car w/ dog barking furiously at us (I’m sure we looked like scary aliens.) Both of us turned our heads and yawned and the dog simply stopped barking. Amazing and so easy. Made a believer out of my skeptical husband.

Oh, I definitely think this subject is absolutely fascinating. I’ve actually considered getting into researching dog behavior and such simply because it is so interesting to me. I’ve heard about calming signals before, but, like others, I often forget about them because many people are not aware of them. Again, awesome video! Thank you!
