I had 6 dogs already that ran deer but they were all lost last hunting season. I now have 8 walker dog puppies and i have never trained dogs myself how can i train them could i use deer scent or do i need a fur or should i buy an older dog already running deer?

Some have it in their blood, but others need to be trained. Get them a deer hide to smell and chew on. Thake them out and put them on tracks to follow, and then, during the season, let them run with an experienced dog.

here, it is illegal to use dogs to run deer. In fact, any person can shoot and kill any dogs seen running deer or any other game animal except for cougars or black bears. I’d sure check close with F&G in your state to make sure it’s legal. Can’t help you with the training as I have never hunted with dogs.

This depends on entirely were you are at but in many states it is now illegal to run deer with dogs. You see dogs will run deer for miles and miles across land that is not your own. Running deer with dogs is something I view as not much more sporting than canned hunting.

This is coming from a guy who uses walker hounds to bay hogs and hunts all types of small game with dogs. Difference is.. my dogs never go more than a few hundred yards out of my sight at the most.

When I’m hunting and some jerks dogs come running through my land I shoot them without second thought. I then toss the dogs on the back of my ATV and go searching the dirt roads for the owners. The same owners never come back twice. I spend all year managing my land, it isn’t yours to chase the deer off.

Sorry.. had to let that loose!
