i heard that you can train small dogs to go in a litter box. i am getting a yorkie poo, and i was wondering if it could work. please help! 10 points for the best answer!=]

I have a Chinese Created the hairless type. I trained him in 2 weeks. I crate trained him like any other dog but instead of taking him outside to potty i had a doggy litter box in a large kennel and I would place him in thatand locked him in . When he went potty I gave him a piece of his puppy food as a treat and I would let him out. I had the kennel litter box in a spare bathroom on the other end of the house from where his night night kennel was. He was trained in 2 weeks to where I could leave his night night kennel open and he would get up and go to his potty kennel.
When it got warmer outside I put his kennel buy the door and within a week the potty kennel was gone until the next winter he has never forgot. He is now 3 years old and fall and winter he goes in his potty kennel and in the spring and summer he is a outside potty-er. I hope this helps.

Yes, but it’s more difficult than with cats.

Cats tend to bury their scat by instinct, less so with dogs, so the results can be more unpleasant with dogs than with cats.

Yes, they have special dog litter boxes you can buy at the pet store, if you start young enough it shouldn’t take long. It’s called Doggie Litter or something like that.

Yeah, you can. It’s harder, I think. But it’s possible.

It only works with small dogs, if I remember correctly.
I don’t think you’d want like, for example, a Great Dane using a catbox. XD

I just got a mini pinscher….I’m using "PeePee Pads" They sell them everywhere and they’re really cheap…They work great…You put one down..where you want them to go do theire duty…and the pad actually attracts them to that spot…I strongly recommend this..Good Luck and congrats on your new addition :)

Purina has a new thing out – called Second Nature. It is a litter box system for little dogs. Check it out. Good luck, I hope it works for you!!

You would constantly have to put the dog into the litter box and hope the dog gets the message.

You probably could if it is indeed a small dog. There are scents you can buy at pet stores that will indicate to an animal where you want it to do its "business". You could probably just spray that into the litter box and after a few weeks the dog will start going to that spot on its own.

    yes you could

its quite easy if you know how.

when the dog goes to the "toilet" pick him up and put him in the litter box. do this over and over angain and he will realise what to do.

when he/she dose it on its own reward him or her

i’ve heared that it isn’t good to use a litter tray with a dog . i just take mine out when it needs to but if you are worried about mess train the dog to use newspaper. in emergency. i’ve trained mine it too two days only.

Yeah, you can, but the smell factor is different than with cats. It’s basically like paper training. You have to be persistent though. I don’t know if you really want this, but it’s possible.

You can, but it won’t be easy.

Cats take to litter boxes due to a natural desire to bury their waste. Dogs don’t posess this instinct, so box training generally leads to in-home elimination.

And, please don’t support breeders of mixes. If you want a mix, the shelters are full of them.

Good luck, in my experience all dogs want to do is eat the litter.

Yes you can, it’s very similar to paper training. You use the same principles by encouraging the pup to use the box (you can even buy special stuff that you add to the litter and it attracts the puppy to that area). However, I’d really not recommend either option.

It can be very difficult to re-train a dog who’s learned to use a litter box, to ‘do his business’ outside. Unless you honestly forsee your pup having to use the litter box for the next 10 years or so, I’d recommend training him to only ‘go’ outside.

When it comes to house training, using a crate is by far the simplest and quickest way. It’s very important to get the right size crate and to follow a routine. You can find out more about crate training here http://www.the-puppy-dog-place.com/crate-training-a-puppy.html

Small dogs can be more difficult to train that larger ones simply because their bladders and tummies are tiny. They need to eat and drink a lot as they have a fast metabolism, consequently they need to eliminate a lot too!

When your pup is tiny it’s important to take him out at least every 30 mins during the day. He should be able to go through the night with only one (maybe two) potty breaks to begin with. It will get better as gets older. House training takes time, consistency and patience. But if you follow the advice given at the url above you should have a house trained pup within a few months.

The website below was especially designed for new puppy owners and I think you’ll find lots of useful information and tips there. There are also lots of fun stuff and interactive pages. Best of luck with your new puppy!

My boyfriend bout his dog a litter box just for dogs. As for pooping in it..his family Isn’t too dedicated with his training so he just poops everywhere still, it’s a shame. I’m sure with consistency you can train your dog to poop in the litter box =). I assume it would be like training a puppy to pee on puppy pads, which is a challenge but it can be done. Good luck!
