So, last night I found a CL ad written by a lady trying to rehome her dog bcuz he escaped her house and chased a neighbor lady and her dog home growling and snarling.
I emailed this lady and suggested a doctors visit and some training. She has decided to keep her dog (yea) and try some training. She also mentioned that it’s really not in the budget to hire a personal behaviorist, and was planning on going to Barnes and Noble to look for some books.
Any suggestions welcome…I’d love to be able to help this woman and her dog. She is just overly concerned about aggression right now because she has a young daughter.
I’ve done my best to convince her that her dog doesn’t need to be put down or rehomed…now I’d like to be able to recommend some training tools for her to use.
THANKS!
Anthing besides Cesar Millan please!
Thanks Tony…much appreciated ![]()
A little background on the dog. They’ve had him for 4 years…since he was a pup. He’s an ACD/Lab mix, and has never shown any signs of aggression. They left their window open on Monday and he pushed through the screen and was barking at a neighbor walking her small dog. That’s it…the whole story.
Thanks everyone…some of these look like great books. I think I need to get a couple for myself ![]()
Greekman…I agree she should consult a professional, but I think that educating herself a bit on dogs and their behaviors could be helpful in the mean time. I don’t know this woman…I’m just trying to help in any way that I can. I appreciate your advice.
Thanks Shelter Puppies…I’ll pass along the link to her. ![]()

he has been roundly condemned by the American Humane Assoc (the film approval folks) as INhumane + old-fashioned.
Tamar Geller, Jean Donaldson, Pat Miller, Trish MacMillan, Victoria Stilwell are all good.

WELL. when i was looking for books and lit. on training, i found there were 2 sides: positive reinforcement and "old fashioned training". it seemed very black and white too..i think it really will depend on how the dog responds..whether pos. reinforcement or negative reinforcement or both. I really think she needs the support of a behaviorist though..like say to use a soft muzzle..she can’t just walk into the situation with the help of books imo..it would be dangerous.
she might want to find some nonprofit orgs that have dog training…one of the shetlers in my area does nonprofit dog training..it’s cheaper and not any worse quality than paying more for one.
if she has internet, this group is very professional http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/agbeh/

amazon.com has a list of the most popular and "best" dog training books. Here is a link to that list of dog training books: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Books-on-Dog-Training/lm/Q30N260PKEEA
I have never read it, but I have heard a lot of good things about the first book on that list, Karen Pryor’s Don’t Shoot the Dog! So, perhaps suggest that one to her. Or just forward her a list like the one that amazon.com has; and with that list on amazon you can click on the books’ titles and then read info about them. So, that may help her to decide which books would be most helpful to her.
Best wishes!

Also try The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell

Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson, Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller, any book by Ian Dunbar, How to be Leader of the Pack by Patricia McConnell –are all good.
She might be able to find these all pretty cheaply on Amazon.com, and I think if the order is over $25, the shipping is free.

IF this person does indeed have a dog that behaved in that manner, there is no book anywhere that will be able to help her with this dog!!!
I don’t know how old the dog is, what breed or whatever, but, if that person were responsible enough, that dog would have had a lot of training in it by now..if it has not happened yet and the situation was allowed to progress this far, no book will be able to help her!
This is not a situation of a book, this is a situation of laziness or ignorance!!! Hope I helped!

I know you don’t wan to hear it, But I’m going to say it because it is a GOOD answer. Ceasar Milan books especially Being the Pack Leader. Training your dog is not just about your dog learning something…it’s about the owner learning too.
