Positive Dog Training

http://www.DogProblems.com The “Purely Positive” Dog Training crowd would have you believe that using a pinch collar or a remote electronic collar/e-collar is cruel and inhumane.

But the one thing they can’t explain then is: Why is this dog so happy?

If correcting your dog is so inhumane, then this dog wouldn’t want to come out of the house!

The truth is: Dogs, like children, need to be told, “No.” They thrive on real world dog training and look forward to pleasing their owners.

To learn real world dog training techniques that work on any dog, subscribe to our free weekly dog training tips e-zine at: Dogproblems.com.

By the way– this dog has only received 20 minutes of training every other day– and we only adopted him last month.

Nothing on the market explained dog training the way we thought it should be explained. So I wrote my own dog training book. You can start learning how to get your dog to listen to you, anywhere you go, with my best-kept and most effective training secrets you can start transforming your dog in less than 10 minutes . . .

    Way to go! Its …
Way to go! Its about time somebody says what everyone else is thinking. There’s a reason the “purely positive” trainers get so defensive about this training…it works!

    Traditional vs …
Traditional vs Positive is imaterial, your dog is happy because hes playing. When it comes down to the nitty gritty a training method is a human factor a dog just goes with its instinct. What the real argument is what sort of a trainer needs to use harsh methods when there are better ones out there?

    Uh, don’t bother …
Uh, don’t bother looking at the dogs tail. If you did you would notice that it is moving in such a way that only happy dogs move them. If it was stressed, it wouldn’t be that high. Have you ever seen a dog before the one in this video?

    “By the way …
“By the way vibrator seems just as effective on my dog”… I dont think you’re suppose to use your vibrator on your dog as a reward. ;)

You can say that two times.

    I consider choke …
I consider choke chains and prong collars traditional training and e-collars modern training. A real trainer does not pay attention to what method he is using at any given time. A good trainer will use what ever tool is needed at the time to get past the hump. Every single dog needs a learning faze and a corrections faze. Bottom line is You cannot train a puppy with pain and you cannot train an agressive dog with food. The most important thing is being able to read the dogs.

Then we have a heck of a lot of trainers out there who don’t know the first thing about using treats as a reward.

    This whole debate …
This whole debate these days over “purely positive” and “traditional” methods kill me. If you ask me, all methods have their pros and cons, It REALLY depends on the individual dog as they are all different and will respond differently to methods. Pinch collars etc.. are NOT inhumane, ask any knowledgable person, though there is also nothing wrong with using treats to train a dog if it works. People’s opinions will most likely not be changed so this fight that people have these days is pointless.

    Positive …
Positive reinforcement is NOT bribing your dog with treats. Anyone who is using rewards as a bribe is not doing it correctly.

    Your argument is …
Your argument is pure nonsense. It boils down to: “Ignore what you’re seeing. Even though he looks like a happy dog and acts like a happy dog– he’s really not happy because it doesn’t fit with my political agenda.”

    Just because …
Just because something is different does not mean it is bad. Yes, “positive reinforcement” with the use of treats is what is most popular today. However it does not work for every dog. I do not use it with any of my dogs (and I work with dogs for a living) or my clients dogs. I won’t go in to all my reasons, but I do know what I feel confident in. I use a non-treat based method, but I do not use e-collars, pinch or choke. I just use a simple martingale collar and regular 5 or 6ft leash. It works

    Look at 0:45 and …
Look at 0:45 and you’ll see the collar.

As for only using it for training and then not needing it anymore: Remember: Reinforcement never ends. Unless you’re only working the dog around the same distractions in the same location– you’ll need ot reinforce the desired behavior from time to time. The training collars are a way of communicating with your dog. You don’t stop using them at a certain point, just like you don’t stop using words at a certain point, to communicate with your kids.

    Now that’s a happy …
Now that’s a happy dog. Pinch collars do work. My 70 lb. husky/lab mix was such a strong puller my wife couldn’t walk him. I took Adam Katz’ advise, got a pinch collar and what a difference! He now ‘heels’ and pays attention to his walker. He’s happy when he sees the collar and leash come out and he sits to have them put on. I have a sled harness for him too and he can pull me on my bike to his big furry heart’s content. Pinch collars are a valuable training aid.

    The point of using …
The point of using e-collars and pinch collars is so that you don’t have to use those collars. You don’t see them being used in the video because they have been used in training. The end result is a dog that is happy to obey but also realizes that obedience is mandatory, the epitome of correct training.
If you bribe your dog, you will have to bribe your dog forever and will never get to as high a level of training as can be accomplished using the humane tools of e-collars and pinch collars.

    I see the pinch …
I see the pinch collar but obviously you are not using it to coerce the dog into doing something he doesn’t enjoy. THIS IS POSITIVE TRAINING. I own 2 Golden Retrievers and have had great success with both the e-collar and the pinch collar. My Male Golden who would not stop pulling on the leash became a pleasure to walk in 5 min after I fitted him with the pinch collar. GREAT VIDEO

    I am a Certified …
I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer using mostly positive reinforcement training. I also purchased Adam Katz’ training videos and book. He is an exceptional trainer in my opinion. However, I agree with positive training methods for the average pet owner mostly because they do not have the proper timing skills, thereby confusing and inflicting unnecessary discomfort for their dogs. In the proper hands, e-collars and pinch collars work wonders, but not for the average dog owner.

I don’t see you using an e-collar or pinch collar in this video. I’m only seeing positive training methods here – verbal praising for correctly doing commands.
