In a couple of months I will be buying a German Shepherd puppy for my family. Of course, I’ve done a lot of research on the breed before I made the decision and I can’t really find one negative thing about them other than they tend to be prone to hip dysplasia. I do have some knowledge on How to Train Dogs but I also want a little help from professionals for good measure. How much, on average, do dog obedience classes cost and how does the program usually work?
Group classes run about $75 for a 6-10 week course. Private lessons, $75 & up per session. "In-kennel", $1000 and up…the dog stays at the kennel, and you’re brought in periodically to learn how to handle.

How do they do it?
The way I start my dogs on human remains – and this can translate to drugs is I set up one "hot" pipe and several negative pipes (pvc pipe with holes) and I set them up in a line – I give my dog the command that will associate the scent and when he shows the SLIGHTEST interest in the "hot" pipe, I reward with praise, toy, food whatever the motivator is for the dog. My Rottie has two certified finds on drowning victims one on the lake and one in a river. I’ve had great success in starting them out this way and just moving on from there. I also have a specific toy that has been "scented" with HRD that we play with which helps to reinforce the scent with him a bit. He is food rewarded and pavlov’s theory comes in because when we are on a search and he comes into "scent" of the HRD he begins to drool a bit as he is relating the scent to his food reward.
Drug dogs do not get ADDICTED – that is ridiculous – they would have to ingest the product or inhale it for that to happen and great care is taken when training drug dogs that this does not happen. They are responding to a chemical compound of the particular drug that is why they are able to scent on different types of drugs (they are taught one drug at a time). It is very hard to get certified to train drug dogs because you have to be trained to handle the training material. There is a company called Sigma that produces a Pseudo scent that dogs can be worked off of but they should be trained on the real drugs as well.

‘How to train’ Door Dashing Dogs
26 Feb 2010
Door Dashing
http://www.pamsdogacademy.com
http://ptfordogs.blogspot.com
What is door dashing? It is when the dog will just run out of the door whenever the door opens and does not ask for permission. They just zoom out of any open door.
Why is door dashing unacceptable? Door dashing is unacceptable because it can be dangerous for the dog. The dog could run out into traffic and get hit by a car. The dog could run out and get attacked by another dog, which is what happened to Jacob the pup in this video. The dog could get lost or stolen if the dog is not trained to come when called. The dog could knock over the human while getting zooming out the door.
Reasons to train a dog to wait at the door:
•Safety!!!
•It could save his life one day.
•It helps to improve impulse control.
•It teaches good door manners.
•It teaches the dogs that if he wants to go outside and sniff, play, etc. that the human is in control of those resources.
•It teaches the dog that paying attention to the owner allows him to get what he wants. In this case it is going outside.
•Helps to improve communication between dog and owner.
•Helps to show the dog that by doing the right behavior they will get to do what they want.
•It puts the owner in charge of reinforcement by not allowing the dog to just be self reinforced by running outside.
•The process of training a dog to wait at the door really builds value for the dog being inside the house. Just as much fun, treats, good things happen when inside the house!
I DO NOT believe that if a dog goes through and open door before the human that he is being dominant. To me that is a silly belief. I personally DO NOT even use the word dominant in any of my training, because I simply do not believe in the dominance theory at all! Remember that the dominance theory is just that, a THEORY! It is also a theory that has been proven to have MANY flaws and to be FALSE. If a dog runs out before the human they are not trying to be dominant, but simply want to get outside to have fun. The outside world is very reinforcing to a dog! There is a lot to do out there past the door. Like the song: Girl’s just wanna have fun, Dogs just wanna have fun! Dogs door dash because there is a FUN world out there and they want to explore it. I say let them explore it, but teach them to do it in a safe secure way in order to prevent any accidents or injury to your dog.
If they learn how to wait at the door and then you just release them to go outside, but they have not learned how to come when called, you really need to put the dog on a long line or leash and go out with them. So, train your dog to come when called before you just let him run off outside. Keep your dog safe and use some common sense.
Even though my dogs are trained and I let them go outside in front of my house off leash, I am ALWAYS out there with them. I do not live on a busy street, but I do not take chances with my dogs just because they are trained. I supervise them at all times. I want them to be with me for a long time! I also train them to love going back inside and when we are done outside all I have to say is “back inside” and away they go. You will see this game that I play called the inside/outside game and see what I mean. I believe that reinforcement drives behavior, so go out there and reinforce those behaviors that you want your dog to do. I bet your dog is doing many good behaviors that go unnoticed or unrewarded. Try to ignore those bad behaviors refrain from yelling and start reinforcing those positive good behaviors!
Dogs are like kids, they need to learn these behaviors (come when called, wait at the door, etc.). Dogs do not just come into this world knowing what we expect of them. It is our job to teach them and set them up to succeed in the crazy human world.

I have a 6 month old puppy that I can’t break of some very annoying habits, despite having tried many things.
I’d like to try private lessons.
If public/group lessons are the only option, I could go for that. She needs socialization as well, but I think she would freak out too much at public lessons. This is the kind of dog that if she even sees an object that has another animals scent on it, she will choke herself (on the leash), and squells and whines (very loudly and endlessly) to get to it. For example I’ve tried introducing her to someone. After an hour of being in the prescence of the other person, she calmed down a little but still broke into fits of squelling and whining shrilly, all because I wouldn’t let her run over and bite, scratch, and jump all over the person.
We only have one shelter, Noah’s Ark, and I do not believe it offers lessons of any sort. Nor is there a Petco or Petsmart or anything of the sort within 50 minutes of here.
Anyway, sorry for the long explantion. With all this said, does anyone know of a place or qualified person who offers private Dog Training in Gainesville? If not what group training is available? Also if you know the prices that would be helpful too.
Thanks a bunch in advance!
sorry no one is answering.

I’m adopting a 4yr old and her 8month old pup- what can I do to begin this as soon as they arrive here? Thanks…!
my backyard is fenced in, but I have children and want to have the mess confined to make clean up fast and easy
Put them on a leash when you take them outside to do their business and always take them to the same spot. When they go in the right spot praise them. Soon they can pee off-leash and hopefully will go in the same spot.
What are the best puppy training books/methods?
26 Feb 2010
I am getting a 10 week old female american eskimo dog. I need some good books on basic behavioral training, housebreaking, etc. I don’t want a method that uses treats as a means to train the dogs.
Also, how young should one start training a puppy?
Here’s a site where you can get such information, http://miniurl.com/2698
Good luck!
Its been difficult trying to train my dog for the past few months and I find myself having less time to spend with her right now but that is only temporary. However, I would like to send her off to a dog school where she can spend a couple of weeks learning how to be obedient and great dog. I used to spend a great amount of time working diligent with her by reading books, watching the dog whisperer and other Dog Training videos and they only seemed to work a handful of times. Please let me know if you have any personal experience with sending your dog off to a training school in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA and getting great results! Thanks!
Obedience classes are for dogs AND their owners. Find some training classes and MAKE the time to go with your dog. Having someone else train her is completely pointless if you aren’t there as well learning how to handle YOUR dog.
"I used to spend a great amount of time working diligent with her by reading books, watching the dog whisperer and other dog training videos and they only seemed to work a handful of times." all of that time could have been spent in obedience classes with your dog being shown how to train your dog by a LIVE person.
